Winter Tips: Protecting Your Lawn from the Ice and Snow

Here comes the snow! Before the snowflakes begin to fall, prepare your lawn and landscaping from the elements with a few simple tips. As an expert landscaping company in Buffalo, we have a few suggestions on how to help your trees survive the harsh Minnesota winters. A few simple lawn care tips and tricks can ensure your trees and grass come back and flourish in the spring.

Wrap Up Those Trees
Landscaping Company BuffaloWrapping your trees can help keep them healthy for next spring. Sometimes, when the sun hits the bark, this can cue the tree to emerge from dormancy. And later in the day, when the sun goes down, parts of the tree can be hurt when the temperatures drop. Wrapping your trees can help protect them and help them regulate their temperature. Wrapping your trees can also protect them from animals and the like.

Winterize Your Sprinkler System
Give us a call at Advanced Irrigation and we will prepare your entire irrigation system for the winter. This is a very important element in proper cold weather lawn care! We drain the remaining water from the sprinkler system, ensuring all water if removed from your pipes. We use an air compressor to “blow out” the overall network, making sure there is no water left in there that could potentially freeze and damage the system.

Brush off Those Branches
After a snow fall, go out to your yard and gently shake the snow off of your tree branches if the snow that fell is dry and fluffy. You can use a broom for this task, but be gentle. Keep an eye out for snow that is building up on the branches and, if it is safe, run outside during the snow storm to shake the branches if necessary.

Practice Safe Snow Removal
During the winter, ice is a common problem and many people will automatically reach for salt to melt the ice. But when you use salt to melt the ice on your sidewalk and driveway, it can damage or even kill your plants and grass. When we come to your commercial building to remove snow and ice, we use deicer that is safe for your plants and grass.

Scheduling Your Fall Blowout: The Importance of Lawn Sprinkler Winterization

The first day of autumn is September 22nd and with the cold winter months right around the corner, it is time to start thinking about scheduling your fall blowout. Have you considered your lawn sprinkler systems need some TLC before winter to avoid damage? As experts in lawn sprinkler systems in Buffalo, we know just how important fall blowouts and winterization can be. We would like to provide a rundown of the process as well as some of the benefits you can expect. And when you’re ready, call Advanced Irrigation as soon as possible to make sure your lawn sprinkler systems are on our fall blowout schedule.

Why is it so important for sprinkler systems to be prepped for winter? Can’t you just turn off the water and leave the rest of the system alone?

If you try this, there will still be water sitting in your lawn sprinkler system which can freeze and expand in cold weather. When it expands like that, it will be too much for the system. Thus, pipes, fittings, valves and other parts could crack open or burst. That means you could end up spending a lot of money to get those parts repaired or replaced when spring time rolls around again.

This is where the ‘fall blowout’ comes in. We drain the remaining water from the sprinkler system, ensuring all water if removed from your pipes. We use an air compressor to “blow out” the overall network, making sure there is no water left in there that could potentially freeze and damage the system.

After choosing the area of your lawn that is furthest out from your home, we will work our way back in towards it. Your sprinklers will run for two to three minutes, allowing all water to drain properly. Once the water switches over from mist to just air kicking out, we move on to the next one, and so forth.

We will then make sure the timer or controller is turned off. This means that the system will not turn on during the winter months, but you will not lose any of the programming in the system either.

Have you considered a freeze or rain sensor for your lawn sprinkler system? If you don’t already have one, this is a great way to monitor the outdoor air temperature and rain fall. That way, if the temperatures drop below freezing before your system has had its proper fall blowout, the sensor will keep your lawn sprinkler system from turning on.

And, these are just a few of the ways you can be proactive and help prepare your lawn sprinkler systems for fall. Now is the time to schedule your fall blowout! So, don’t wait any longer. Call Advanced Irrigation at 612-599-8675 or contact us to set up your Free Estimate.

Beyond the Blooms: Lasting Features for Your Year-Round Landscape Design

Many landscapes must endure the changing seasons, especially here in Minnesota. If you wish to enjoy your property year-round there are a few features to consider for your landscape design in Plymouth. We are going to take some time to focus on trees, hardscaping and similar installations that can take your lawn from growing season through fall and into the winter.

Walkways, patios and retaining walls are a great way to keep your landscape looking great beyond the blooms. When the plants go through their dormant stages in winter, it is awful nice to have a landscape design that has implemented some hardscaping. When you are laying out where walkways go, follow your family’s natural path in and out of your home. Your landscape design needs to fit in with the everyday needs of your family and guests.

Decorative concrete and decorative retaining walls are incredibly popular landscape design ideas. They are a great way to combing functionality with eye-catching aesthetic beauty. They keep your landscape functional and pleasing to the eye no matter the time of year.

You will want to actively take care of your hardscaping during the winter months. Be mindful of salt usage. If you apply it but let it sit, without removing it, it will eat away at or even stain any concrete, paver or stone that has been incorporated into your landscape design.

Trees & Shrubs

Try to include plants in your landscape design that will offer year-round enjoyment, and try to place them in view of your new walkway. You should try to have a plant or two within your new landscaping or garden that grows and blooms during every season. That way, you and your guests still have something pretty to look at no matter the time of year.

If you have any fences or shrubs that border your walkway, make sure they are no higher than two feet. This helps alleviate any feelings of crowding as people are walking on the walkway.

Lighting & More

Lighting is a great way to brighten up your landscape even in the dead of winter. Add colored lights for a festive flair or simply use them to light the way and highlight your hardscaping. Our technicians in landscape design install many sorts of hardscaping items like outdoor fire pits, pergolas, lighting and more.
